PeaZip is a free file archive tool and rar extractor for Windows and Linux that handles more than 200 archive types (7z, ace, arc, bz2, cab, gz, iso, paq, pea, rar, tar, wim, zip, zipx…), handles spanned archives (001, r01, z01…) and supports multiple archive encryption standards.

This project aims to provide a cross-platform, portable GUI front end for several open source technologies (7-Zip, FreeArc, PAQ, PEA, UPX), focusing on file and archive management, and security (strong encryption, two-factor authentication, encrypted password manager, secure deletion).

PeaZip 9.0 is officially released, and the updated content of this version is as follows:

rear end:

the code

  • Fix and clean up legacy code
  • Improved progress bar
  • Improved speed and memory usage
    • When opening an archive of 250,000 items, memory usage is reduced by 10% and speed is increased by about 10%.
    • Adding files to archive/extracting is about 3x faster, some previous methods had poor performance (like dragging and dropping files to archive).
    • Removed performance bottleneck when selecting large numbers of items

file manager

  • GUI better adapts to size and preference changes
    • Address breadcrumb adapts to the number of items displayed on the application window width for improved usability
    • If the toolbar is hidden, the main functions will be displayed to the right of the address bar, along with the style menu.
    • In Main Menu > Organization, it is now possible to set whether to “sort directories before files”
  • The style menu “…” on the right side of the tools/address bar can now display the main menu as a popup menu.
  • Navigation menu now toggles sidebar (navigation, treemap, hidden) and shows Headers context menu.
  • Add and extract actions are now displayed on top of the “Open” submenu in the side menu and the “Open” submenu in the navbar.

Extract and archive

  • Added new options for 7z/p7zip backend
    • Added option to not modify last access time of input files
    • Added option not to follow symbolic links for WIM and TAR archives
    • Added option to limit maximum memory usage during compression
    • Reorganized the advanced options of the 7z/p7zip archive creation interface
    • The new options are still not available on macOS as there is an old 7z version on that platform that doesn’t fully support all the new features
  • Improved support for the TAR format, and for formats used in conjunction with TAR
  • Improved support for ZPAQ and *PAQ formats
  • Updated compression preset script
  • Updated PeaZip plugin
