This year’s KDE annual developer conference, Akademy, announcedaccessibility, environmentally sustainable software, and new community goals for internal process automation. Members of the KDE community plan to hold a talk on the 28th of this month to advance their agenda around these goals.

Specifically, the new goals are:

  • KDE for All – Improved accessibility:This isn’t the first time a proposal for accessibility has been submitted, but this year the community decided it was time to take action. The proposal’s authors point out that making KDE software accessible will require the cooperation of many parts of the community, from designers to library developers and even tweaks to the underlying Qt toolkit. Testing will also be more challenging because of the need to ensure everyone’s accessibility requirements are met.
  • Sustainable software: KDE software is many things: free, beautiful, performant, customizable…the list goes on and on. Next,KDE Software is committed to meeting environmental sustainability goals.Cornelius helped set up funding for KDE Eco, where KDE steps in to research to produce more energy-efficient software. He plans to help continue to certify KDE apps (Such as KDE’s PDF reader Okular), set up tests to measure the software’s impact on the environment and, if needed, increase its efficiency.
  • Automate and systematize internal processes:Every year the number of KDE applications grows and the community gains more users and more hardware partners. But at some point, relying solely on the efforts of volunteers to deliver a critical piece of high-quality software to everyone no longer scales. The community plans to work towards automating the process,Help continue to ensure that their volunteers can continue to effectively deliver new software to users.

thisPrevious KDE community goals centered around consistency, focus on KDE applications, and Wayland support. The announcement states that these old goals will not be forgotten and will continue to advance; butThe choice of a new target indicates where the community is headed next.
