OpenShot 3.0 is now released, a release that includes over 1000 improvements over 12 months. OpenShot is a cross-platform open source video editing software. The project was initiated by Jonathan Thomas in August 2008. Its goal is to provide a stable, free and easy-to-use video editor. The core video editing functionality of OpenShot is implemented in a C++ library called libopenshot.

Some update highlights include:

  • Improved stability and memory usage
  • Enhanced real-time video playback performance.

One of the biggest and most notable changes in OpenShot 3.0 is the improved video preview, making it smoother with less stuttering and pausing during the preview. The development team redesigned the decoder to better cope with lost packets, lost timestamps, and better understand when video or audio data is lost, so it can keep going without pausing.

Dozens of bug fixes and related improvements also help OpenShot 3.0 expand compatibility to more video formats and codecs, especially newer video formats that tend to rely more on multi-threaded decoding, such as AV1. Additionally, many improvements related to EOF (end of file) detection and file duration detection further broaden compatibility even for poorly encoded files with missing timestamps and incorrect durations (this happens in JavaScript-encoded videos and certain very common in video capture files of type).

The video cache has also been heavily refactored and improved to provide new features and more optimizations. OpenShot utilizes a cache background thread to prepare upcoming frames before they are needed. This caching algorithm has been improved to run at different speeds (1X, 2X, 4X) and in forward and backward directions. It also now includes a pre-roll for building video frames before playback begins, providing a smoother playback experience.

  • Timeline and usability improvements (snapping, keyframes, waveforms, default folders, etc.)

Snapping accuracy has been significantly improved (while trimming and moving clips/transitions). Holding SHIFT will snap the playhead line to the edge of the clip.use razor Tool Slicing Clips is now faster (requires less CPU).Keyframe icon gets much needed face lift, and is also more accurate (i.e. positional). Keyframe icons now represent interpolation modes (circle for Bezier, diamond for linear, square for constant), and can be clicked and filtered. Video effects now have unique colors for each effect. Transitions now set their own direction (i.e. fade in vs fade out) based on where they are dropped.

For those who prefer to work with audio waveforms, this feature has also been greatly expanded and optimized in OpenShot 3.0.

  • Ability to export multiple clips and videos simultaneously
  • improvedUser Guide/Documentation/Help Manual
  • Updated language translation and translation system
  • Support for extended video formats
  • Blender 3.3 support
  • 4K display | monitor Support (High DPI)
